Morning Depression can be Defeated
Tuesday post early...
I’m sitting on an airplane right now listening to the people behind me complain about life in general and specifically about how retched their morning was. I can’t help but remember when bad mornings would set off my day, week and sometimes month.
Some mornings are just harder than others. What is it that happens during the night that drowns our spirits before the awaiting dawn? We happen! We don’t take ourselves out of the waters of despair the night before, or even that morning when we awake. So how do we do that? Below I have two challenges for you to do every single day for the next six weeks. I personally started doing these things when I was in a state of deep depression. It saved my life. I now live a life of joy. I have moments of sorrow and I cherish those moments. But my life is lived on the sunny banks instead of in the waters of anguish. If it can save my life from those fridged waters, yours may be too. If your life is already okay or even fantastic it will enhance each and every day for you as well.
Challenge #1
Have an attitude of gratitude!
Every evening write down 10 things you are grateful for from that day. Each day should have a unique list. Don’t repeat. Start fresh each day. It could be a smile you received from a stranger, a kind word, something nice you did for yourself or someone else.
When I was first challenged to do this I could not think of a single thing to be thankful for. After 5 minutes of contemplating, my dear husband asked if I could breath. I looked at him puzzled and said, “Yes.” “Are you grateful you can breath?” To be perfectly honest, I wasn’t really sure if I was or not. The next two weeks all I could write down were body functions; I can breathe, I have hands to feel, I have eyes to see, I have a mouth to eat and speak with, etc… The biggest trick for me was, not repeating things. After just a couple of weeks I started seeing the positive things going on around me. Things like; a stranger opening the door when my hands were full, someone letting me ahead of them on the interstate, a simple smile from a child… then the list started getting more and more personal; things that were said, events, service given and received, etc… Today I have to limit myself to 10 items. Though I will admit on rough days I’ve been known to list up to 100. Those are the days that “I” need it the most!
By having an attitude of gratitude, my thoughts are free to wander on the good, and solve the not so good as I sleep. As a side note: My dreams are much more pleasant now than they were before.
Challenge #2
Start a simple list of daily affirmations!
(I’ll go into more detail on affirmations another day. For now start with this simple list.)
When something goes wrong the human spirit is prone to either blame someone else or ourselves. Usually we blame ourselves for being “stupid” enough to listen to/be with/whatever the other person or situation. This brings in negativity on top of negativity. So turn it around. I’m not saying that you can’t kick yourself for listening to bad advice… we all do… but don’t dwell on that. Dwell on the positive things you do.
Write a list of 50 things you do well. It could be; I make good chocolate chip cookies, I eat cookies really well, I’m good at filing, I’m a good listener, I have a nice smile, I’m a good gardener, I brush my teeth really well… I don’t care! The first list my have things like I listed above. Shoot for more substantial things as you go, and later you can modify your list or add to it to include all of your talents and strengths.
Read through this list 3 times out loud ever single day. If you are not willing to read it out loud, read it silently 10 times a day. They both have the same outcome.
When something negative happens, someone says something not so nice, we do something we think it less then intelligent… make your mind go to the list of things you do well. After a time, you’ll be able to automatically go to this list subconsciously and face the negative thing before you. You will no longer feel like a looser, but a winner with an opportunity to gain yet another talent.
Take these challenges and let me know of your progress along the way. I really do want to know. Also I’d love it if you would share your secrets to a beautiful morning every morning, keeping personal relationship activities out of it of course.

A Day of Thanks
Thanks to all of you who noticed the spelling errors in yesterdays post. Of course I did it on purpose to see if anyone was really reading (Big Cheesy Grin)...

Recognition
Rosemarie Rossetti says, “It is important that you recognize your progress and take pride in your accomplishments. Share your achievements with others. Brag a little. The recognition and support of those around you is nurturing.”
